If you were him, would you have wanted to tell you? You already weren't sure of yourself. If he'd told you that there was someone else that looked exactly like you that he knew years ago, what would you have thought? Would it have made you feel better?
...That's not all there is to a life. There could have been other things that made him want to put it all behind him.
