Castiel's dead. He's being taken to the clinic, but we'll have to wait on him. He was the reason for the burst of light.

He said something earlier, about trying to do something...and coming back for Dean if it worked. Maybe he was trying to leave.

Perhaps. Certainly he would not be the first, but it was a rather outlandish method. It is possible that his delay may be returned by the gods for that attempt.

To be able to travel between worlds using light, however... is intriguing on its own.
